SSC CGL Tier 2 2026: Complete Syllabus & Exam Pattern (Paper I, II, III)

Tier 1 is a qualifying stage — Tier 2 is where your final rank and post allocation are actually decided. Since this site's first 30 articles focused entirely on Tier 1, this begins our coverage of Tier 2: the complete syllabus, exam pattern, and what's genuinely different from Tier 1 preparation.

Total Tier 2 marks range from 450 (most posts, Paper I only) to 650 (if you're also applying for a Paper II or Paper III eligible post).

Paper I: Section-Wise Breakdown

Paper I is conducted in two sessions on the same day:

• Session 1 covers Section I, Section II, and the Computer Knowledge module of Section III
• Session 2 covers the Data Entry Speed Test (DEST)

Negative marking: 1 mark deducted for every wrong answer in Sections I and II — double the penalty compared to Tier 1's 0.5 mark deduction, so accuracy matters even more at this stage.

• Profit & Loss, Discount, Simple & Compound Interest
• Time & Work, Time-Speed-Distance, Mixture & Alligation
• Algebra, Geometry, Mensuration, Trigonometry

This is significantly more advanced than Tier 1's Quantitative Aptitude section — expect deeper Geometry and Trigonometry coverage than you saw in Tier 1.

Reasoning & General Intelligence — Detailed Topics

• Verbal Reasoning: Analogy, Classification, Series, Coding-Decoding, Blood Relations, Direction Sense
• Non-Verbal Reasoning: Figure series, Mirror & Water images, Paper folding, Embedded figures
• Syllogism, Statement-Conclusion, Puzzle-based seating arrangements

English Language & Comprehension — Detailed Topics

This largely mirrors Tier 1's English syllabus — Cloze Test, Synonyms/Antonyms, Idioms, One-Word Substitution, Spotting Errors, Sentence Improvement, Para Jumbles, and Reading Comprehension — but with a higher difficulty level and typically longer passages.

General Awareness — Detailed Topics

Computer Knowledge & Data Entry Speed Test

Computer Knowledge covers basics: hardware/software fundamentals, MS Office, internet and networking basics, and computer security concepts. This section is qualifying only — you must clear a minimum threshold, but it doesn't add to your merit score. The DEST requires typing a given passage at a specified speed on a computer, also qualifying in nature.

Paper II: Statistics (JSO & Statistical Investigator Grade-II Only)

Only relevant if you're applying for these specific posts. Covers Collection and Classification of Data, Measures of Central Tendency and Dispersion, Correlation and Regression, Probability Theory, Sampling Theory, and Statistical Inference. This is a distinctly different, more specialized syllabus from the general Tier 2 Paper I.

Paper III: Finance & Economics (AAO/AAO Only)

Only relevant if you're applying for Assistant Audit Officer or Assistant Accounts Officer posts. Covers Finance and Accounts fundamentals, Economics and Governance, covering 100 questions for 200 marks.

How Tier 2 Prep Differs From Tier 1

• Higher negative marking (1 mark vs. 0.5) means guessing carries more risk — be more selective about which questions you attempt
• Deeper Math topics (Trigonometry, advanced Geometry) not tested at all in Tier 1
• Longer, harder English passages and questions compared to Tier 1's format
• Two qualifying-only components (Computer Knowledge, DEST) that don't affect your score but must be cleared regardless

Q1. Do I need to prepare for Paper II or Paper III?
Only if you're specifically applying for Junior Statistical Officer/Statistical Investigator Grade-II posts (Paper II) or Assistant Audit/Accounts Officer posts (Paper III). Most candidates only need Paper I.

Q2. Does Computer Knowledge really not matter for my score?
Correct — it's qualifying only, meaning you must clear a minimum standard, but scoring higher within it doesn't boost your merit rank. Don't over-invest prep time here beyond what's needed to clear it comfortably.

Q3. When is SSC CGL 2026 Tier 2 scheduled?
