New Topic 1: Data Sufficiency

This question type gives you a question and two (or more) numbered statements. Your job isn't to solve the problem — it's to determine whether the given statements provide *enough* information to solve it, without actually calculating the answer.

Q: What is the age of Ravi?
Statement I: Ravi is 5 years older than his brother Suresh.
Statement II: Suresh's age is 20 years.

Data Sufficiency: How to Approach It

  • Read the question first, then evaluate each statement in isolation before considering them together
  • Ask: "Could I calculate a definite, single answer using just this statement?" — not "does this seem helpful?"
  • Only combine statements if neither works alone, and check if the combination gives one definite answer
  • Watch for statements that seem to help but actually give a range or multiple possibilities rather than one fixed value — these are not sufficient

This tests your ability to track a specific step-by-step process — usually numbers or words being rearranged according to a hidden rule across several steps, and you must identify the rule and predict a specific step.

Solution: The rule arranges numbers in ascending order at the start, and words alphabetically at the end, one step of each type completing per line. Step II moves the smallest remaining number (12) next to the already-placed 8, giving "8 12 24 marble kite doll" — numbers now fully sorted, words not yet.

Input-Output: How to Approach It

  • Compare each step to the one before it — identify exactly what moved or changed position
  • Numbers are often sorted ascending or descending; words are often sorted alphabetically or by length — check both possibilities
  • Once you identify the rule from the given steps, apply it forward or backward as the question requires — don't assume the rule without verifying it against every given step

New Topic 3: Statement — Course of Action

You're given a real-world situation or problem statement, followed by two suggested "courses of action." You must judge whether each action is a sensible, practical response to the stated problem — this tests judgment, not pure logic.

Worked Example: Course of Action

Q: Statement: Several employees at a company have complained about slow internet speed affecting their work.
Course of Action I: The company should immediately terminate the internet service provider contract.
Course of Action II: The company should investigate the cause of the slowdown and consider upgrading the internet plan if needed.

Solution: Course of Action I is an extreme, premature response without understanding the actual cause. Course of Action II is a reasonable, proportionate first step. Only Course of Action II follows.

Statement-Based Reasoning: How to Approach It

  • Look for actions that are proportionate to the stated problem — extreme or drastic actions are usually wrong unless the statement itself describes an extreme situation
  • Prefer actions that investigate or address root causes over those that jump straight to a final, drastic decision
  • Be wary of actions that sound reasonable but don't actually follow logically from the specific statement given
